Prepare Plants at King County Greenhouse for Autumn Restoration Projects
Saturday, July 18
9am-1pm
Renton - Maple Valley
Join Friends of the Cedar River Watershed to help prepare plants for use in parks and restoration sites across King County. We'll move pots, pull weeds, and get plants ready for autumn restoration projects. The Greenhouse is a fascinating place; almost everything you see there has a recycled history. The roads are paved with recycled King Dome rubble. The planting tables are made out of old jail bunks, hot dog carts, and even an Olympic diving board.
In addition, the Greenhouse is located right next to the only operating landfill in King County (although you wouldn't know it since the landfill is surrounded by a lush grassy hill). After lunch, volunteers will take a tour of the landfill to see exactly where King County trash goes and ask questions from a knowledgeable tour guide. Strangely, the dump is a great place to spot wildlife, including deer and bald eagles. Where else can you see Mount Rainier framed by a giant pit of garbage? Come see it for yourself!
